JUDGES BIO’S

Edwin Coleman

Edwin Coleman is a corporate communications manager for the FedEx Corporation whose world headquarters are based in Memphis, Tennessee. He coordinates sales/marketing communications and public relations projects for FedEx. During his tenure at FedEx, he has worked in the company’s International Communications division, where he served as the Public Relations Manager for FedEx Canada, and in Media Relations working with national and international news media.

A volunteer for the Miss American Organization for 20 years, Edwin has judged the Miss Delaware, Miss Iowa and Miss Texas Outstanding Teen state pageants, as well as preliminaries in California, Maryland, Kentucky and throughout the South. He has severed as executive director of the Miss Memphis Scholarship Pageant and producer for the Miss Collierville Scholarship Pageant. He is a three-time winner of the Miss Tennessee Outstanding Production Award.

Edwin is a national facilitator for Chi Psi Fraternity, and presents leadership and career guidance classes at colleges and university thought the U.S. Active in philanthropic affairs, he has worked with the Children’s Miracle Network as a local telethon producer, as a national coordinator for FedEx’s involvement in the Safe Kids "Walk This Way" Campaign, and as a event coordinator for the American Heart Association and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

A journalism graduate of the University of Mississippi, he is trained in voice and piano.

SANDY NICKLAS

Sandy made the shift from contestant in the 1960’s, to pageant support in 1997, serving as Business Manager to Kate Shindle, Miss America 1998, when Kate was Miss Illinois. Sandy still volunteers assisting young ladies preparing for local and state competitions as well as the Miss America Pageant. She has had the opportunity to judge numerous local and state preliminaries coast-to-coast, as well as national and state dance and cheerleading competitions. Additionally, she has judged the National Sweetheart Pageant.

Sandy’s lifelong experience with travel and living overseas (during her father’s tenure as an Air Force Colonel - one of the original Tuskegee Airmen), was an early formative experience that she has developed over her adult life.

Sandy earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art Education and Masters Degree in Special Education prior to beginning her 38-year career with United Airlines. During those 38 years she has been a Flight Attendant; Supervisor; Trainer, and Headquarters Project Manager. As a Supervisor of Appearance at United Airlines Flight Attendant Training Center in Chicago, Sandy oversaw all grooming and poise requirements for thousands of trainees.

With boundless energy and abundant talent, Sandy has also served as a company consultant on Cultural Diversity, International and Domestic etiquette and protocol. She has experience and expertise in special events planning, as well as marketing strategy for private enterprise and non-profit organizations.

Sandy’s special passion is a much needed noble cause: that of mentoring students of low income families. As Director of Development and Marketing for the Results Plus Foundation, she partners with other corporations, organizations and individuals toward that end. Sandy currently resides in Illinois.

ROBERT C. GROW, BORN AND RAISED IN THE PORTLAND AREA, GRADUATED WEST LINN HIGH SCHOOL IN 1989. AFTER PUTTING HIMSELF THROUGH COLLEGE AND GRADUATING LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY IN 1993, MR. GROW LIVED IN MANHATTAN BEACH BEFORE RETURNING HOME IN 1996. SINCE HIS RETURN, ROBERT HAS BEEN A COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE AGENT STARTING HIS OWN COMPANY IN JANUARY 2004. THIS IS MR. GROW’S INAUGURAL MISS OREGON PAGEANT AND HE IS EXCITED TO BE INVOLVED WITH THIS PHENOMENAL EXPERIENCE.

Steven C. Oliveri

Steven C. Oliveri has been involved with the Miss America System for more than 22 years now. He began as the technical & lighting director for a local preliminary and has proceeded through the ranks to producer and even executive director. Since 1995 he has served on the Board of Directors for the Miss Ohio Scholarship Program and is currently the Judges’ Chairman and President of the Board. Steven has judged numerous Miss America local programs as wells as the state finals for Minnesota, New Mexico, Wyoming and Connecticut. He has also has experience with America’s Junior Miss and judged the national finals for America’s National Teenage Scholarship Pageant in Nashville, Tennessee. Professionally, he is an Information Technology Consultant focusing on enterprise solutions for voice, video and data convergence for businesses. He resides in Cleveland, Ohio and in his spare time enjoys boating on the great lakes and traveling, especially to the great state of Oregon.

Dorothy Benham
Edina, Minnesota

Dorothy has stayed actively involved in the Miss America program since her year of service. She is a celebrated soprano, whose voice has blessed many preliminary shows as well as several telecasts with her beautiful grace and strong music abilities. Dorothy made her Broadway solo singing debut in 1989 in "Jerome Robbins' Broadway". Dorothy is a mother of six who has toured with live orchestras using her beautiful soprano voice to enthrall audiences everywhere. She has appeared numerous times as a musical guest on the national television broadcast "The Hour of Power." Dorothy has now released 3 CD recordings, including her most recent entitled, "from the heart," a collection of her favorite Broadway love songs. Dorothy and her husband, Paul Shoemaker, own and operate Dorothy Benham Bridal & Special Occasion, a bridal and women's formal attire boutique in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
